Catherine “Cam” Macris is an Associate Professor in the Earth Sciences Department. Cam’s primary research is in high-temperature geochemistry. She studies the process of magma formation deep inside the Earth and asteroid impacts on the Earth’s surface. Cam teaches several courses at IU Indianapolis, including Windows on Science, Mineralogy, and Reporting Skills in Geoscience. Cam uses authentic assessment and inclusive learning practices in all of her courses. She is currently a member of the FACET Leadership Institute and a facilitator for the IU Indianapolis Equity Champions Program. In 2021, Cam received a SEIRI seed grant to create a series of Geo-Equity Modules (GEMs). The freely accessible GEMs website consists of case studies about environmental issues that disproportionately and negatively impact historically marginalized communities on local, national, and global scales. The GEMs are presented with accompanying class activities including a pre-class worksheet, in-class instructions for guided discussions using an ethical decision-making framework, and post-class reflections. GEMs are tools for incorporating environmental justice into a STEM course using one 50–75 minute class period.
